Each September, University School of Nashville hosts the Fall Book Frenzy, a used book and media sale and school fundraiser that is also open to the community.  Hardbacks sell for $3 and paperbacks for $1-2.  This year, I’ll be donating for sale most of the books I’ve featured at Bacon for the last 18 months:  Spread your joy in the world, you books!  I hope you never gather dust – and find your home in many hands.

At Bacon’s table, there will be a wide variety of mini-curated collections, a few of which are pictured below:

There will also be more than 20,000 other books to choose from!!  A special feature this year is the sale of books from the personal collection of the late former Chancellor of Vanderbilt, Alexander Heard.  For the broad USN Community, there will be a silent auction of several other small collections of 5-10 books, including Ann Patchett’s favorite memoirs, Jon Meacham’s works, Tim Wise’s suggestions for reading on racism, Vince Durnan’s education collection, and Bacon on the Bookshelf’s Best of Bacon 2015, among others.

unnamed-7 Co-chairs Caroline Bradshaw and Susan Schoenecker love the festive, community-minded atmosphere of the Fall Book Frenzy.  Not surprisingly, they are each big readers.

Caroline picked up Miracle at St. Anna by James McBride at last year’s Fall Book Frenzy because she had enjoyed McBride’s Color of Water.  “The Fall Book Frenzy is the perfect place to be adventurous and pick up an unknown book because The Price is Right!”  She loved Miracle at St. Anna, “historical fiction about a battle in Italy during World War II involving the famed Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division. This story of African-American soldiers and the bonds created with villagers in Italy conveys an enduring faith in humanity, no matter how flawed.”

Susan says, “Fall Book Frenzy is fun and exciting and buzzing with energy and at the core of it are books.  I love to see kids lost in looking at the books, wandering the tables reading the spines and sometimes just sitting in the middle of the floor surrounded by the pile of treasures they have found.”  One of her favorite purchases last year was a 1953 collection of The Bookshelf for Boys and Girls:  “I love the red color of the books and the fantastic illustrations that grace the pages.  The stories remind me of my parents, as the books are of the same era as those I would find at my grandparents’ home – books that had once belonged to my parents.”
