40702401 - united kingdom and european union relations and trade deal talks

When I picked up Pepper from puppy playtime yesterday, she didn’t have her usual cheerful demeanor.  Maybe it was the heat – or maybe something else.

“What’s up, Pep?” I asked.

“I’m just tired,” she replied.

“I don’t think you’re just tired,” I pressed.  “You’re rarely tired in my observation.”

“Well…all the dogs were talking about the Brexit today, and I feel sort of confused and worried,” she admitted.

“I know what you mean, Pep,” I empathized.  “It’s strange to think about.  Unsettling and interesting.  But Winston Churchill has made me feel better today.”

“It’s a good idea to turn to Churchill in times of trouble,” she agreed.  “What did he have to say?”

“Here are a few things:

“It is a mistake to look too far ahead.  Only one link of the chain of destiny can be handled at a time.”

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

We had reached home by then, and I lifted her out of the back of the SUV.  She’d rather jump out, but I’d rather her not.  I’m protecting her hips.

“I remember something else he said,” she added.  “‘I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.'”

“You silly dog!” I laughed.  “I love it when you’re self-aware!”  She ran to the front door and waited for me to open it.  (I’m well trained.)
