In reading this last one, I was prompted to think that desire is often counter-balanced (sometimes quite tragically) by an overriding sense of duty.  I think that Paul Ryan may be perhaps wrestling with such conflict between desire and duty today.  Without presenting literary examples to support my point, I do feel that many works, both of fictional and historical origin, are compelling in their attraction primarily on account of the ever difficult decisions between desire and duty.
