Madeira School. YEARS ago I chaired the Board at Harpeth Hall. Sam McMurry had gotten me elected to a six-person trustee committee for NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools. One of the other five was a charming woman, a DuPont I believe, who chaired Madeira’s board. We came to know her pretty well, standing squarely behind her and supporting her when Jean Harris, then head of Madeira, shot and killed her feckless lover, Doctor Arnold Tarnhower, the diet king. She went to prison, of course. But we all learned quite a bit about Madeira.
