What seems to have occurred lately is that current authors of historical accounts are writing their accounts much in the style of novelists, making history much more enjoyable in comparison to the commonly boring, force-fed lists of names, places, and dates in the old high school history books. A fairly good example of such writing is "Impeached" by David O. Stewart. Thanks to Gus for an interesting review of Kim Philby's treachery.
