Jennifer, thank you for this beautiful post. Rick, thank you for so eloquently stating a truth that has been so difficult for people in the dominant culture to see. This is our own generation’s defining moment. While I have been learning about my white privilege for several years now, that is no longer enough. These very public and horrific tragedies are making it impossible to ignore what has been true “under the surface,” and in plain sight, for generations. When change comes, it doesn’t come all at once. It can be ridiculously slow and costly to those at risk. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” How can we be a catalyst for change? Learn more. Read one of the many excellent books on the subject. Form a discussion group or book club based on this topic. Support non-profit groups that are taking action or find a way to take action yourself.

Change can and must happen in order to live up to the promise and vision of America, and to create “a more perfect union.” It takes time. We can hasten that change by starting with ourselves and our sphere of influence.

Jennifer, thank you for this blog this morning. I know Rick as a “regular” person who does not have the experiences he described. I cannot even imagine having to endure those atrocities.
I am hopeful that Nashville can return to the southern, welcoming, laid-back city that we once were.

It is impossible to read this without tears. Mr. Ewing lives in a place where I do not, but he makes what he faces so clear that we can all understand it. Mr. Cooper’s reference is apt and, though it ended well, It might not have. He has certainly been gracious. But that it happened in the first place…

Hope? I don’t feel a lot this morning. Hearts have to change one at a time. And there are – even among my friends – so many hearts and so little time. The protest turning violent dishonors the murdered man and makes the future even more difficult.

One must simply keep plugging.
