Because the mower did not come
the wild things grew
and sang wild songs
and the tulips remembered the melodies.
A grandmother’s bluebells
(long since forgotten)
woke up, looked around, told some jokes
because the mower did not come.
Because the mower did not come
the field balm threw a party and invited everyone
even the outliers and introverts.
Tulip and wild thing,
bluebell and field balm;
Thy will be done.
(The mower, thank God, didn’t come.)

Words are insufficient to the day.
Please let this anthem be my Easter gift to you.
Jesu, Lover of My Soul
Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; hide me, O my Saviour hide, till the storm of life be past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last! Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace on thee is found, grace to cover all my sin. Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee. Spring thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. Amen.
It’s just like the gracious field balm to remember to include the shy introverts in the joyful Easter celebration.
The field balm fills my meadow with blooms in the spring then fades to green for the summer… it is the saddest part of summer in my yard. I must remember it is – still there. Xoxo
I couldn’t find a LIKE button to say how much I loved this–all of it. Wildflowers are my favorite flowers. My walks take longer than necessary if any of them are present. Thanks. Peace and Joy this Easter Day, LaMon
Jennifer, your words remind me of car trips when I was a little girl. My Mom would make my Daddy pull off the road, so she could pick the wildflowers, and I’ve loved them ever since. Happy Easter!
Oh I love that your Mom had him do that!! What a lovely memory she gave you!! Xoxo
Peace and Joy to you as well, LaMon! Thank you for being in touch. Xoxo
Happy Easter Jennifer! Lovely post!! I’m glad the mower did not come.
Happy Easter, dear Carolyn! I almost want him never to come. Xoxo

Jennifer, thank you for this gift today. The photographs and the voices.
Sweet friend with the unique inner voice that sings on our virtual pages, I’m the last to discover this post, but it keeps Easter–and spring–fresh in my heart. Thank you for planting the wildflowers in my life
